OPEN-ENDED STORIES

SOCIAL SKILLS: Resolving conflicts.

SELF-MANAGEMENT SKILLS: Codes of behaviour.

SOCIAL SKILLS: Co-operating.

A: What can we do?

B: I don’t have a clue!!

A: She will kill us!

B: I know!!

A:  What if we pretend we haven’t seen it?

B: And what about the noise? We could have not seen it, but it is impossible to haven’t heard it!!

A: Sure…

(They hear something)

B: Shhh! She’s coming!  (Mum enters) Hi mum!

A: Hi mum! How are you?

Mum: Great! In a hurry, as usual! Let’s go quick!

A and B: Where to?

Mum: To the train station. Dad is coming back home tonight!!

(SILENCE)

Mum: I’ve said dad is coming back home tonight!

B: (hesitation) Ahh! Really? What a surprise!!

A: Yes!! What a surprise!

(Mum grabs the car keys)

Mum: Off we go! Into the car! Seatbelts, please!

(music sounding in the car and mum singing ridiculously)

A: (whispering) Well, tell me what to do.

B: (whispering back) No, you tell me. You are the eldest so you must have a solution for everything.

A: (continues whispering?) A solution for explaining mum what happened? And what’s worse: explaining mum and dad?!!!!! I don’t have a solution. The only thing I can do is….

B: Great, tell me.

A: It’s…

B: Say something quickly, we are nearly there!!!

A: I’ll tell them it was your fault. Yes, that’s it. Yesterday you licked my carrots before mum went into the kitchen so…

B: And you hid my broccoli under the sofa and told mum that I had thrown it to the bin!

A: (raising his voice) Yes, but that was after you…

Mum: So, tell me guys, what’s going on? Why are you whispering? Are you preparing a surprise for dad? Oh, you’re lovely! My dear boys!

(ridiculous singing again)

A: Can you stop shaking your hand in front of my face?

B: You can’t complain, haha, I’m not touching you!!

A: I’m giving you the hi five in your face!

Mum: Can I hear angels talking at the back?

A: (touching B’s ears) Yes, this angel next to me with his ridiculous wings! Haha

Mum: PLEEEEEASE! Stop fighting now or I’ll leave you right here.

(two seconds silence)

B: Perfect, let’s keep fighting, she’ll leave us here and they won’t punish us.

A: OK, to the count of three.

A and B: ONE, TWO, THREE.

FLOWERS

Last Sunday we went for a fantastic walk. The weather was really nice and we hiked for a couple of hours. We just wanted to relax and enjoy, and we did, but I hadn't imagined that fostering curiosity in my kids could go that far...

We found a flower and we took a picture of it (a yellow one, not a big deal!); then we came across an orange one; next, a beautiful indigo flower was right there, kind of waiting for us...

   And the questions arose...

'Mum, why do you buy flowers when you are happy?'

   'They represent happiness', I answered.

'Really? I've seen flowers in cementeries'

'You are right...', 'I also buy them when I want to set a nice table'

   'Are flowers edible?'

   'Some of them are'

    'What a waist of time!'

    'What?'

'I'm saying that you waist your time cooking then because you can buy edible flowers. You don't have to cook, our table looks nice and we have fun eating decorations!'

'Mum, can flowers be the dessert for cows?'

   'Let me think...'

'And mum, if the cauliflower is a flower, does cauliflower perfume exist?'

I could continue writing down our conversation, but I think it's enough...

Anyway, find vocabulary about flowers here:

Writing, writing and writing.

I love writing. It relaxes me a lot. It makes me stop and think, reflect about life, and what’s more it helps me remember vocabulary that I hardly use.

I also find it exciting from the artistic point of view, and lettering has become one of hobbies.

My children like and hate writing. One of them loves writing, other hates it, and the other likes it but is lazy enough to do it as frequently as I’d love to.

My solution (or not): finding excuses and making them write without thinking of writing. How?

1. They are in charge of writing the shopping list:

2. They write letters to their grandparents, previously blackmailing them with a nice set of envelopes.

3. Create a story (all together inventing it).

4. Ask them to leave crazy notes around the house.

5. I pretend I have an ear infection and I ask them to please please be in silence and do not talk to me, just write things down  (LOL, I love this one).

6. Let them write nice messages on windows using window markers.

I hope you can also enjoy this crazy ideas.

PAINS AND ILLNESSES

Thinking about illnesses and the difficultness that sometimes our kids encounter to express pain, I have selected some pages that our children can use to learn some vocabulary about this topic.

I have also created a list of the most frequent words and expressions (from my experience, of course). Get the PDF for free here:

Following my teacher instinct I remembered some folk tales that talk about sick people and that can be used in the classroom. Take these two examples: two wonderful versions Little Red Riding Hood:

A poem written by Ronald Dahl:

LEARN AND PRACTICE COLOURS VOCABULARY

Concious English learning.

Your children know that they are doing activities to learn English. It is fantastic as they can see the  importance of learning and recognize their own progress.

One problem: dificultness maintaining motivation.

What activities can you do if this is your case?

  • Using flashcards

listen, point and repeat

Run, touch and repeat

Take one out and guess the missing one

  • Simon says touch something... (red)
  • I spy with my little eye something... (Green)
  • Sing songs
  • Read stories
  • Copy poems.
  • Read the sentences and complete them with the correct colour (e.g.: The sky is ____)
  • Correct the spelling mistakes.
  • Cut out the letters of the colours, shuffle and organize again.
  • Sort animals by colour.

Unconcious English learning.

Your children think that they are coloring, sewing, etc., but you know that they are learning English.

What activities can you do if this is your case?

  • Color by number worksheets.
  • May I borrow your... (yellow) crayon, please? (Interact with them in English).
  • Dress a doll.
  • Make plasticine shapes in different colours.
  • Mixing water colours (they usually love the magic of science).
  • Making bracelets with beads (interact with them and describe the beads).
  • Sewing buttons to customize garments (interaction again).

COMMON EXPRESSIONS

I know that it is difficult to force ourselves to speak English at home, specially if we are Spanish speakers.

Using simple everyday expressions can be a useful way to practice English.

We live running, we love relaxing, but we can't. We would love to have our nails done, but we normally bite them, etc., etc.

Could you spend time teaching your children English? Honestly, I'm not able to find time at all.

The only solution I found was this: obligue all of us to use some common expressions in English, even though the rest of the conversation was in Spanish.

Concerning complaints and siblings fights my rule at home was: I only listen to you if you say it in English (what mean mother!).

FOOD AND DRINK

FOOD AND DRINK

Cooking, writing shopping lists, designing balanced menus or tasting dishes from other cultures are examples of activities we can do at home with our kids.

They can learn vocabulary and improve their IB profile attributes:

BALANCED: Understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for yourself and others.

OPEN-MINDED: (...) You seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and you are willing to grow from the  experience.
